CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : OAKLAND : BART May Keep All-Night Service

Officials with the Bay Area Rapid Transit system may continue costly, all-night service on the system after the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reopens, a spokesman said Friday. The overnight service costs an average of $17 a passenger. Officials do not want to turn away the estimated 130,000 new BART riders that have used the system since the Oct. 17 quake. “If we give the impression that we will be scaling back, we will send the wrong message to people,” said BART General Manager Frank Wilson. “Starting the Monday after the bridge opens, let’s see what the riders do.”
