HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : La Jolla Beats El Camino in Volleyball Quarterfinal

Julie Anthony and Leah Williams each had six kills as No. 2 La Jolla defeated El Camino, 15-7, 15-3, 15-6 in a San Diego Section Division II girls’ quarterfinal volleyball match.
La Jolla (17-9) will play Escondido, which defeated Ramona, 15-5, 15-10, 15-11 in another Division II quarterfinal match, in the semifinals Wednesday. Aimee Smith had 18 kills for Escondido.
No. 4 Mission Bay (8-7) defeated Oceanside, 15-4, 15-3, 15-2, with the help of Monique Mierzwa’s 11 kills.
In the Division III quarterfinals, No. 4 La Jolla Country Day defeated No. 5 Holtville, 15-13, 15-4, 3-15, 6-15, 15-9. “We just lost our concentration in the third and fourth games,” said La Jolla Country Day Coach Peter Ogle. “And they played well in those games.”
La Jolla Country Day will play No. 1 Christian, which defeated Julian, 15-3, 15-13,15-5.
In the other semifinal, Calvin Christian will play Parker. Calvin Christian defeated Bishop’s, 15-7, 15-11, 15-10. Parker defeated Calipatria.
Girls’ Tennis
No. 1 Bishop’s meets No. 2 La Jolla at noon for the 2-A championship, and No. 1 Poway plays No. 2 Torrey Pines for the 3-A title as section girls’ team champions are decided today at Tennis Escondido.
This will be the fifth consecutive meeting between Bishop’s and La Jolla in the section final. La Jolla won in 1985 and 1986, and Bishop’s has won the past two.
Poway and Torrey Pines are also familiar with each other. Both have been in the title match four of the past five years.
