A system of cash payments to University of Minnesota football and basketball players that began under football Coach Joe Salem continued after Lou Holtz took over, fired university administrator Luther Darville testified. Darville also said that basketball Coach Clem Haskins knew of the payments.
Darville, who is being tried on swindling charges in Minneapolis, said he never discussed the payments with Holtz.
Holtz and Salem have denied any knowledge of payments to athletes, as has Haskins.
Darville headed the Office of Minority and Special Students until he was fired in April 1988.
