LOCAL : Man Who Tried to Aid Harassed Woman Shot at Santa Ana Store

From Times Staff and wire service reports

A Costa Mesa man who tried to come to the aid of a woman was in serious condition at a hospital today after being shot in front of a Santa Ana convenience store, police said.

Danny Aranda, 30, was shot by a man who pulled a pistol as the two were fighting, Santa Ana Police Lt. Robert Helton said. The fight erupted about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday when Aranda tried to intercede on behalf of a woman who was being harassed by the man in front of the Circle K convenience store at McFadden Avenue and Flower Street.

Aranda was subduing the man when he suddenly pulled a gun and started shooting. Aranda was hit twice in the groin and buttocks but managed to flee across the street, where he hid behind a parked car, Helton said.

The short, stocky gunman fled before police and paramedics arrived. United Western Medical Center in Santa Ana reported that Aranda’s condition improved overnight from critical to serious.
