BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — More than 100 miners were trapped underground today when a fire blocked their way out of a coal mine in central Yugoslavia, news reports said.
The mine near Aleksinac, 120 miles south of Belgrade, was still ablaze late in the afternoon several hours after the fire broke out in one shaft, Tanjug news agency said. State television said 104 miners were trapped.
The fire broke out at 1:30 p.m. and quickly cut off the main access shaft of the mine. A mine official in Belgrade refused to give additional information, but the mine’s telephone operator said 40 miners had come out of the pit in the afternoon.
It was not clear whether they were among those reported trapped.
