Newbury Park 19, Palos Verdes 9--Newbury Park rallied from a three-point deficit in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory at Redondo Union High.
Palos Verdes led, 9-6, with 8:23 to play when Newbury Park linebacker Ryan Turner intercepted a Blake Anderson pass at the Sea King 23-yard line. Three plays later, Jeff Buchanan ran for a one-yard touchdown to put Newbury Park ahead, 12-9.
On Palos Verdes’ next series, running back Bill Smiley fumbled at his own five-yard line, and nose tackle Jeff Jay recovered for the Panthers (7-2-2). Joe Smigiel, a tackle, clinched the victory with a seven-yard touchdown run on a tackle-counter play.
With the score tied, 6-6, in the third quarter, Palos Verdes (9-2) had taken a 9-6 lead on a 23-yard field goal by John Miller, four plays after Mark Antrobius recovered a fumble by Newbury Park quarterback Jai Johnston.
Walter Thomas of Newbury Park led all rushers with 99 yards in 19 carries. The Panthers play Santa Barbara next week.
