ON THE SIDELINES : Pirates Re-Sign Manager, GM

PITTSBURGH — Despite their fifth-place finish last season, the Pittsburgh Pirates today extended the contracts of General Manager Larry Doughty and Manager Jim Leyland.

Leyland, who signed a two-year contract extension after the 1988 season, had his contract extended through 1991. Doughty, whose contract would have expired next month, got an extension through 1990.

Doughty was criticized by the media and front-office officials of other teams for several trades that contributed to the Pirates’ 74-88 record and fifth-place finish.

His most heavily criticized deal sent starting pitcher Mike Dunne and the organization’s two top minor league prospects, outfielder Mark Merchant and pitcher Mike Walker, to Seattle for shortstop Rey Quinones. Two months later, the Pirates released the erratic Quinones, apparently after deciding he was a negative influence in their clubhouse.
