SHORT TAKES : Wonderworks for L.A. Schools

Entertainer Stevie Wonder announced he will headline a benefit concert in January to raise money for Los Angeles inner-city students and their schools.

“Rejoice in Los Angeles,” set for Jan. 6 at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, will raise money for The Inner City Foundation of Excellence, Wonder said during a news conference. The foundation was formed to help combat education problems in the inner city, including a 50% dropout rate among high school students, he said.

The other performers joining Wonder will be announced at a later date. The grand finale of the concert will be Celebrity Choir, which Wonder will coordinate.

Among the performers already confirmed for the choir are Barry Bostwick, Vikki Carr, Marla Gibbs, Danny Glover, Robert Guillaume, Louis Gossett Jr., Edward James Olmos, Charlene Tilton and Clifton Davis.

The foundation was formed two years ago to raise money to improve salaries to attract teachers to the inner city, refurbish school sites and fund college scholarships.
