Gabor Files Appeal of Conviction; Hearing Set

Zsa Zsa Gabor, sentenced to spend three days in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills motorcycle officer, has filed an appeal of the misdemeanor conviction and asked for a stay of the sentence until the case is settled, possibly sometime next year.
Attorney Harrison E. Bull, who represents the Hungarian-born actress, filed the appeal Monday, claiming that Gabor’s former lawyer gave her incompetent legal defense during her celebrated trial in September. Bull also alleged that Gabor was singled out for harsh punishment and thus denied her constitutional right to equal protection under the law.
At a Dec. 5 hearing, Beverly Hills Municipal Court Judge Charles G. Rubin is expected to issue a stay of Gabor’s jail sentence pending results of the appeal. The hearing is considered a formality because state law requires such a stay in misdemeanor cases, Deputy Dist. Atty. Elden Fox said.
