LAGUNA HILLS — A Garden Grove man suspected of drunk driving suffered serious injuries after he stopped his car in the middle of Interstate 5 because he was ill and was hit from behind by a mail truck early Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
Jose L. Mendez, 22, was in serious condition Saturday night at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.
The CHP said Mendez, driving southbound on Interstate 5, north of La Paz Road, stopped his car in the second lane from the right around 1:55 a.m., got out and threw up on himself.
A mail truck then rammed into the unlit Ford Escort, injuring Mendez, according to the CHP. The driver of the mail truck was not hurt. Mendez was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol.
