ANGELUS LEAGUE : Mater Dei Has No Trouble in Victory Over St. Paul

SANTA ANA — Mater Dei High School suffered no letdowns Friday night against St. Paul, less than a week after defeating Bishop Montgomery to take over sole possession of first place in the Angelus League. The Monarchs cruised to a 92-59 victory over St. Paul.
Mater Dei, the county’s top-ranked team, is 21-1 overall, 5-0 in league. St. Paul is 4-14, 1-4.
David Boyle, who scored 24 points, and Dan O’Neil (17 points) sparked a 12-1 Mater Dei run in the second quarter that gave the Monarchs a 43-18 lead with 1:55 left in the first half. Mater Dei led at halftime, 46-25.
Boyle scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter. He scored on two driving layups that became three-point plays when he was fouled, and added another layin off a steal to give Mater Dei a 73-38 lead. Mater Dei’s man-to-man pressure defense forced St. Paul into 24 turnovers. St Paul shot 30% from the field (20-66).
Ryan Granillo scored 22 points and had eight rebounds and Brandon Ertle scored 20 to lead St. Paul. Charlie Andres added 12 points for Mater Dei.
