BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Free Throws Help Helix Hold Off Mt. Miguel

Ray Dukes hit both ends of a one-and-one with 11 seconds remaining to give Helix a 53-49 lead, and the Highlanders held on for a 53-51 Grossmont 3-A League victory Tuesday at Helix.
Mike Martin scored 13 points, and Brandon Sanders added 11 for Helix (9-6, 2-2).
Shannon LeFever scored 19 points to lead Mt. Miguel (1-3, 11-7), which has lost three out of its past four games since point guard Domingo Rivera injured his thigh.
In another Grossmont 3-A League game:
Granite Hills 66, El Capitan 56--Scott Georgens, a 6-foot-8 center, scored a game-high 32 points to lead Granite Hills (8-13, 3-1), which has won seven of its past nine. El Capitan is 9-11, 0-4.
Grossmont 2-A League
Santana 43, West Hills 39--Mike Renner (13 points) and Ken Ervin (12) combined to lead visiting Santana (4-17, 2-2). Travis Ahring scored 10 and Steve Poirier eight for West Hills (0-15, 0-4).
Grossmont 78, El Cajon 37--Todd Jaeger and Kevin Simon scored 23 points apiece to lead visiting Grossmont (10-8, 3-1). El Cajon is 2-16, 1-3. Grossmont and Valhalla will play a game Friday at Grossmont that likely will decide the league title.
Citrus League
Borrego Springs 77, Tri-City Christian 76--Gary Vasquez hit a 12-foot jump shot with five seconds remaining to give Borrego Springs the victory at home. David Hernandez scored 26, Mark O’Brien 16 and Vasquez 15 points for Borrego Springs (8-6, 4-0).
John Abshari scored 27 to lead Tri-City Christian.
Coastal League
Army-Navy 49, Mt. Empire 46--Army-Navy took a 26-19 lead at halftime and had to hold on for the victory at home. Phil Parks, Jim Choi and Chris Crayton scored 10 points apiece for Army-Navy (8-9, 4-3).
Bishop’s 59, La Jolla Country Day 55--La Jolla Country Day outscored Bishop’s, 13-7, in the first quarter, but Bishop’s rallied to hold on to first place with the victory over second-place LJCD.
Brian Aalbers scored 20 points and added 12 rebounds for Bishop’s (16-4, 7-0). Noah Katsell for LJCD.
Nonleague
USDHS 80, Madison 56--Peter Ellis scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds as USDHS (11-5) had little trouble with visiting Madison (2-19).
Kearny 81, Morse 64--Tommy Rawlins scored 29 points, Darnay Scott 17, Guillermo Bajarano 12 and Carlos Morgan 10 for host Kearny (13-8), which made 27 of 35 free throws. Morse is 12-10.
