Report Shows Economy Declined: The National Assn. of Purchasing Management said its monthly index fell in January to 45.2%, down from 46.7% in December. The sharp decline in January was the ninth drop in a row and the rate of decline was the greatest since the last recession, the nation’s purchasing managers said in the widely watched survey. A reading below 50 indicates that the U.S. manufacturing economy is declining, the group said.
