California IN BRIEF : PALM SPRINGS : Temblor, Shock Rattle Remote Area

A medium-sized earthquake and a smaller aftershock struck a remote area 22 miles southeast of this desert resort city, but no damage or injuries were reported. The first temblor measured magnitude 4.2 and was followed two minutes later by the aftershock, measuring 3.1, said Hall Daily, a spokesman for Caltech in Pasadena. “There have been about a dozen (earthquakes) in the last couple of weeks in the same general area,” Daily said. “They seem to be along the San Jacinto fault, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re on the fault. They could be on parallel faults.”
