Juanita St. John, a close friend and business associate of Mayor Tom Bradley, was charged today with five felony counts, including embezzling $180,000 from a city-funded task force created to promote trade with Africa.
The charges, announced by Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner, culminated a six-month investigation and were the latest political embarrassment for Bradley.
St. John, who has been a partner with Bradley in a Riverside real estate investment, surrendered to police today and faced an afternoon arraignment in Municipal Court on two counts of grand theft and three counts of filing false state income tax returns from 1985 through 1987.
