LIMA, Peru — A river boat carrying 209 people, most of them children, smashed into a freighter and sank during the night in the Amazon River. Police said today that one body had been recovered; 134 other people were missing and feared drowned.
The Andresito sank at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, an hour and a half after leaving Iquitos, a Peruvian river port 715 miles northeast of Lima, police there said.
The boat’s helmsman told police in Iquitos that the Andresito’s motor failed and that the vessel began drifting in the Amazon’s fast currents.
