Thieves Make Off With Purse and $5

NEWPORT BEACH — Two men in a stolen Mercedes Benz on Monday robbed two women of a purse containing $5, police said.
Newport Beach Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said the women were about to leave a parking lot in the 300 block of Bayside Drive for lunch when a black Mercedes screeched to a halt behind their vehicle.
The driver stayed in the car while his passenger jumped out and ran up to the passenger’s side of the women’s vehicle, Gonis said. Brandishing a “long knife,” he demanded her purse.
