AT&T; Announces Cut of 6,000 Jobs: American Telephone & Telegraph said it will reduce its work force of about 281,400 employees by at least 6,000 this year. The company said the staff reductions, which were not described as layoffs, reflected the lower demand for manpower at AT&T;’s network services division, which is being fully upgraded to digital technology.
