Philips Will Build HDTV Tube Plant

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Philips Components Display Co. said it will locate a $100-million plant in nearby Saline to make color television picture tubes and products for high-definition television systems.
The firm said the facility would provide about 400 jobs in southeastern Michigan and introduce new technology to the region.
Construction on a 400,000-square-foot plant will begin in July, 1990, and is to be completed early in 1992, the firm said.
Initially, the plant will manufacture 1 million 27-inch color television picture tubes a year and eventually will have the ability to produce high-definition picture tubes in the future.
High-definition televisions are expected to be a major product of the future. Forecasters predict that the market for high-definition television products will swell to $40 billion worldwide.
