BOGOTA, Colombia — A car bomb exploded outside a police barracks near Colombia’s cocaine capital of Medellin today, killing 11 people, a local radio station said.
Radio Caracol said the bomb exploded in the town of Itagui, south of Medellin. Police spokesmen could not immediately be reached for comment.
The radio station quoted local hospital officials as saying that 22 people had been seriously injured. Vehicles and surrounding buildings were badly damaged in the blast.
Colombia’s powerful drug barons pledged last week to step up their war against authorities that has killed more than 200 people since last August.
The bomb exploded a day after military officials announced a series of emergency measures to crack down on organized crime in nearby Envigado, believed to be headquarters of the Medellin cocaine cartel.
