SANTA ANA — A 7-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car Saturday afternoon as she attempted to walk from her father’s pickup truck across the street to her house.
Vanessa Resendis Cruz was hit in the 1200 block of Douglass Street about 1:20 p.m. She was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she was pronounced dead.
The girl jumped out of the bed of her father’s truck as he waited for traffic to pass so that he could make a left turn into the driveway of the family home, according to Santa Ana Police Sgt. Jim Seleno.
She ran into the street without looking and was struck by a 1978 Chevy Monte Carlo that her father had seen approaching, Seleno said.
The driver, Melinda Mendoza, 18, of Santa Ana, was not cited in the incident.
