2 Local Students Among Presidential Scholars

Two San Gabriel Valley students are among 141 high school seniors nationwide selected as 1990 presidential scholars.
President Bush and Education Secretary Lauro F. Cavazos announced the names of the students last week. Local scholars are Jennifer S. Frautschi of John Muir High School in Pasadena and David S. Parks of Arcadia High School.
Of the 141 scholars, 121 were selected on the basis of academic scholarship, leadership, character and commitment to high ideals. They include a man and woman from each state; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico, and American students living abroad, as well as 15 students selected at large. Parks is among this group.
The other 20 were selected based on achievements in the creative or performing arts. Frautschi is an arts scholar.
The students--receiving the highest federal honor bestowed upon a graduating high school senior--will visit Washington from June 16-20, attend a White House ceremony and receive $1,000 each from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, a private philanthropic organization in Morristown, N.J.
