Man Shoots Grandfather to Death, Then Himself

An Eagle Rock man on Thursday was shot and killed by his step-grandson, who then shot himself to death, police said Friday.
James Penuela, 18, shot Euiogio Ayala, 65, apparently once in the head with a semi-automatic rifle, then shot himself in the head, said Detective Grover Randolph of the Northeast Division. Penuela’s 10-year-old sister, who lived at Ayala’s apartment in the 4600 block of Eagle Rock Boulevard, discovered the bodies when she came home from school, Randolph said.
The youth apparently was angry about a dispute between the families of his mother and stepfather, who are divorced, the detective said.
