MCI Offers Break for Small Businesses

WASHINGTON — MCI Communications Corp., sharpening its aim at the $18-billion business long-distance telephone market, Wednesday unveiled a new package of services and discounts for small- and medium-sized businesses.
It said this will give users who spend more than $500 a month on long-distance calls some of the same breaks that big telephone customers receive.
“Smaller and mid-sized enterprises represent the largest and fastest-growing portion of the commercial telecommunications market,” said Timothy Price, MCI vice president for general business.
During peak business hours, rates for normal calls will be a flat 20 cents a minute. For dedicated access lines, private telephone lines set up by private businesses, the rate will be 15 cents a minute.
The new prices are regardless of distance or volume for customers spending $500 to $50,000 monthly on long-distance services.
MCI said it will also offer a standard 20% discount on telephone calls made outside the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. peak business hours.
