Monrovia : New Police Station Urged
A citizens advisory committee recommended to the City Council Tuesday that the police station be replaced with a two-story, 30,000-square-foot building to be constructed at Ivy and Lime avenues at a cost of $8.85 million.
The council accepted the recommendation and scheduled a special election Nov. 6 to let voters decide whether the city should build the station.
Jack Bonholtzer, chairman of the seven-member committee, told the council that the police facility is not earthquake-safe. It was built in 1961 when the city had 7,000 calls for service annually. The Police Department now receives 22,000 calls each year, Bonholtzer said.
The committee recommended financing the new station by assessing each household in Monrovia about $49 a year for the next 27 years and assessing businesses based on their square footage.
