Arco Suit Settled: Southern Natural Gas, a Birmingham, Ala., company, agreed to pay $300.5 million to Atlantic Richfield Co.’s oil and gas subsidiary to settle a suit Arco brought in connection with an explosion on a production platform in the Gulf of Mexico on March 19, 1989. Seven workers were killed and 23 injured in the fire and explosion, which occurred while Southern Natural Gas was preparing to purge an 18-inch underwater pipeline connected to Arco’s platform.
