ROME : EC Presidency to Italy
Italy takes over the six-month, rotating presidency of the European Community from Ireland next Sunday at a crucial time for the organization.
Among the most outspoken supporters of European integration, the Italians will lay the groundwork for two key meetings at the end of this year in Rome: one to finalize plans for economic and monetary union among the community’s 12 member states, and the other to discuss concrete steps toward eventual political union.
During Italy’s presidency, the government of Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti will also seek to convince its European allies to pledge 1% of their gross national products to aid development in Eastern Europe and the Third World.
