BEAR FACTS: Over the objections of animal lovers, the California Fish and Game Commission is expected to approve Thursday a resumption of black bear hunting, blocked by a lawsuit in 1989. . . . But would-be bear trackers will have a tough time in Orange County, where a bear hasn’t been sighted since July 20, 1989, in Holy Jim Canyon in the Santa Ana Mountains. . . . “They turn up very rarely,” says local historian Jim Sleeper. “They are believed to be descendants of pets that were turned loose or escaped.”
