WORLD : Polish Farmers Block Roads

WARSAW — Farmers ignored abuse from angry motorists and rolled tractors across major highways for two hours today in a national road blockade to demand government-guaranteed farm prices.
“From the first reports . . . it seems all main highways have been blocked with farm machinery,” said police spokesman Aleksander Chyl, quoted by the state’s PAP news agency.
On the main Warsaw-Poznan highway just west of the capital in Blonie, four tractors, a truck and a delivery van decorated with white-and-red Polish flags were used to block traffic leaving Warsaw.
A traffic jam half a mile long formed immediately. Some frustrated drivers turned around and others parked their vehicles and sat down in a nearby roadside restaurant. Some yelled at the protesters, organized by the Rural Solidarity union.
