NEW YORK — A fire knocked out power to hundreds of offices in the city’s financial district today, disrupting stock market trading and stranding hundreds of people in skyscraper elevators.
Consolidated Edison officials issued an urgent appeal for other customers to reduce electrical usage because of the danger that other parts of the system would become overloaded. Temperatures in the city were in the mid-80s.
The New York Stock Exchange remained unaffected by the outage, spokesman Ray Pellechia said. But officials at the American Stock Exchange, the New York Mercantile Exchange and the Commodity Exchange said they had to halt trading for the day.
