A South-Central Los Angeles man was robbed and fatally shot Thursday morning as he and his wife walked to work, police said.
Jose Donay Serrano, 29, was taken to USC County Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery, police said. He died a few hours later.
The couple was walking south on 42nd Street about 5 a.m. when a man jumped into their path and demanded money, Serrano’s wife told police.
Serrano gave the gunman one or two dollars, which prompted the robber to shove his handgun into Serrano’s stomach.
They struggled over the gun and the man shot Serrano in the chest.
The gunman ran to a car, possibly a white Ford Escort, and drove away, police said.
