Firefighters found the body of an 81-year-old woman while battling a house fire Wednesday, a Fire Department spokesman said.
The woman, identified as Jewleen Wallace, was found in a studio apartment attached to the house. The cause of death had not been determined late Wednesday, spokesman Jon McDonald said.
The fire started about 4:26 p.m. in a house in the 3500 block of Durant Street, destroying a section of the structure, McDonald said.
The house was in flames when firefighters arrived and it took 30 of them more than two hours to put out the blaze, which started in the carport, McDonald added.
Some residents of the house were handicapped but fled to safety, according to McDonald.
The building was reportedly owned by a Lincoln McDaniel. Cause of the fire was not known, and the Metro Arson Strike Team was investigating.
