Alleged “Straw Man” Charged in Brookside Deal: Federal authorities filed charges against a third person allegedly involved in a fraudulent 1984 real estate deal involving the now-defunct Los Angeles-based thrift Brookside Savings and Loan Assn. Richard Breithaupt Jr. was charged with one count of aiding and abetting in his alleged role as the “straw man,” or phony property owner, in the thrift’s purchase of interest in a large apartment complex in San Antonio. The true holders of the property were Brookside’s former chairman, Michael Moers, and former vice chairman Arthur Pastel, who both have pleaded guilty. (Court Case No. 90-727. Filed Sept. 18, 1990)
