SACRAMENTO — The full state Board of Education today unanimously approved new elementary and junior-high history books that backers say present a full and multicultural view of the world.
The board approved kindergarten-through-eighth grade books by Houghton Mifflin and an eighth-grade American history book by Holt, Rinehart and Winston.
The board, by a 4-5 vote, rejected a motion to also approve an eighth-grade book by Scott, Forsman that was not recommended by the board’s Curriculum Commission.
The board action means that local school districts can begin buying the new textbooks for use as early as next summer.
“I think the books you just adopted are going to make a major addition to the teaching of history,” said state school Supt. Bill Honig. “It was obviously a very sensitive issue.”
