WORLD : Aquino Replaces Chief of Staff

MANILA — Philippine President Corazon Aquino replaced her chief of staff today in the first phase of a Cabinet revamp to tackle a deepening economic crisis and defuse public outrage over a sharp rise in oil prices.
Transport Secretary Oscar Orbos will immediately take over for Catalino Macaraig, Aquino’s executive secretary for more than three years and the coordinator of her energy policies, presidential spokesman Adolfo Azcuna said.
Thousands of workers and students demonstrated in Manila against an increase in oil prices last week that averaged 45%.
