Covina : City Favors Home Alarms

The City Council gave preliminary approval to an ordinance to require all homeowners to install fire, medical and burglary alarm systems with additions that exceed 50% of the original floor area.

The Council voted 4 to 1 to amend a 1984 City Code requirement that new homes have the three alarms. Councilman Tom O’Leary voted no, saying the city shouldn’t force installation in existing homes.

The alarms are linked to a computer at the Covina police and fire communications center.

A final vote is scheduled Jan. 15.
