Security guards took five handguns from two Croatian deputies and two bodyguards at the Yugoslav Parliament in Belgrade, the state news agency Tanjug reported. Croatia is at the center of a bitter dispute over Yugoslavia’s future. It wants to turn the nation into a loose confederation, but that is opposed by Communist-ruled Serbia. The fact that Croatian deputies are carrying arms reflects the high tension between the two provinces, which almost led to civil war recently. The Interior Ministry said that a metal-detecting device would be installed at Parliament.
