Farr, Capistrano Valley’s only returning starter from the team that advanced to the divisional quarterfinals last year, kept the Cougars in the playoffs this season by making a three-point basket with four seconds remaining in overtime Saturday. The shot completed a 52-51 victory over Ocean View. Farr scored all seven of the Cougars’ points in overtime but wasn’t necessarily looking to win the game with the last-second shot. “I didn’t know where I was standing when I shot it,” Farr said. “I looked up at the scoreboard and I saw that we went up by one point and that made me even more excited.” Farr scored 20 of her 28 points after halftime, despite committing her fourth foul midway through the third quarter. Farr, who was a second-team all-Division I selection last season, is averaging 16 points and playing the pressure man-to-man defense that helps the smaller Cougars create offensive opportunities.

Heather Brannon, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 39-35 victory over Santa Fe and 18 points in a 62-21 loss to Estancia in III-AA games.

Melanie Dear, who had 34 points as Garden Grove defeated Villa Park, 61-27, and 17 points in a 41-38 overtime victory over Los Altos in II-A games.

Mary Hulsey, who scored two goals, including one in overtime, to lead Mission Viejo to a 2-1 victory over El Dorado in a 4-A wild-card soccer game.

Michaela Ross, who had 32 points and nine rebounds for Newport Harbor in a 69-43 victory over Los Amigos and 21 points in a 63-60 overtime victory over Alemany in III-AA games.
