WRITE ON: Writing teacher Sol Stein (E1) says using cliches in speech isn’t too horrible, but in writing, avoid them like, well, like a contagious epidemic disease. . . . Stein, who teaches a Mission Viejo course, does say that shopworn language is “not acceptable from the president of the United States,” though you’d “have to go back to the 19th Century” to find presidential speeches free of cliches.
