Proposal to Hike State Sales Tax

In response to “Wilson Proposes Increasing State Sales Tax 1 1/4 Cents” (front page, April 26):
Leave it to a Republican governor to come up with a plan to raise taxes that preys on those of fixed and lower incomes. Sales taxes, like property taxes, are considered regressive taxes because they are not based upon a person’s ability to pay. If Wilson needs to cure a multibillion-dollar budget deficit presided over by his Republican predecessor, then let him raise the state income tax, which is a progressive tax that is tied to a person’s ability to pay.
