Pope Exhorts Mubarak on Peace Mideast Efforts

VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II encouraged efforts to reach a peace settlement in the Middle East in a meeting Thursday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
The Vatican described the 25-minute meeting as a “courtesy call” and as an opportunity for Mubarak to brief the Pope on talks in Cairo earlier this week. The Egyptian president had met with U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III and Soviet Foreign Minister Alexander A. Bessmertnykh on peace issues.
