IRVINE — Tim Murphy, a part-time assistant basketball coach at UC Irvine under Bill Mulligan for five seasons, including the past two, is being elevated to full-time assistant under new Irvine Coach Rod Baker.
Baker, who already had named Greg Vetrone as one of his full-time assistants, interviewed at least two coaches from other Division I programs before choosing Murphy, who had continued to work at the school, offering his assistance to Baker.
Murphy, who played at Long Beach City College and Colorado State, also coached at Irvine from 1985-88 and spent a year as an assistant at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.
Murphy, 30, is the older brother of Tod Murphy, Irvine’s career scoring leader, now a player with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
