SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS : Corona del Mar’s Rhodes, Walden Reach Semifinals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Corona del Mar sophomores Trenton Rhodes and Brian Walden won two doubles matches Friday and advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section individual tennis championships at SeaCliff Tennis Club.
Jeff Holroyd and Vince Cheng of Mission Viejo, who also advanced to the doubles semifinals, were the only other Orange County players to qualify for the second day of play, which starts at 10:30 this morning at the tennis club.
Rhodes and Walden defeated Sean and Jason McKenna of Thousand Oaks, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals after beating Ryan Muller and Ian Marinescu of Capistrano Valley, 6-2, 6-3. Holroyd and Cheng beat Chris Alwood and Allan Grant of Riverside Poly, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, after defeating Steve Tze and Brian Shapiro of University, 6-2, 6-3.
Brad Buchsbaum and Bobby Nichols of Laguna Beach were defeated by Charlie Hoecker and Danny Polsby of Pasadena Poly, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals after beating Jon Messrah and Jason Nevadowsky of Sunny Hills, 6-1, 6-4.
In the singles quarterfinals:
--Top-seeded Peter Jeschke of Santa Barbara defeated Dana Hills’ Kurt Bruggeman, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. Bruggeman earlier defeated Steve Loustaunau of Arcadia, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
--David Murphy of Pasadena Poly defeated San Clemente’s David Roditi, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, who had beaten Russell Hoskins of Agoura, 6-1, 6-0.
--Heath Montgomery of Santa Barbara defeated Corona del Mar’s David Bain, 6-4, 6-4, who had defeated Ryan Junio of Gahr, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
