While the mostly laborious, dark-hued string orchestra suite “Whispers Out of Time” won Reynolds a Pulitzer Prize in 1989, the real prize of this disc is the companion piece. True to its title, “Transfigured Wind II” finds Reynolds using a solo flute to spin off dazzling effects via computer-driven electronics and agitated or meditative chamber orchestra responses, and the engineers make effective use of stereo in capturing it.
