BOYS’ TRACK : Williams, Scott Dash to Double Victories

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Keith Williams may be asking a different question this week at the CIF/Reebok State Track and Field Championships.

Williams, a senior hurdler from Escondido, twice ran away from his competition in Saturday’s San Diego Section finals at Poway High. Twice he wondered the same thing:

Did I beat them by a lot?

Yes, he did.

Williams exploded from the blocks in the 110-meter high hurdles and eased to a victory in 14.34 seconds, only three-hundredths of a second off his section record.

Later, Williams paced the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 37.66, despite going over the hurdles like a football going off the foot of Ray Guy. A hurdler should not go for hang time.

Next week’s question might be:

Did they beat me by a lot?

In Saturday’s Southern Section Masters Meet, two runners in each event had better times than Williams. A bad sign, considering San Diego athletes tend to peak at the section meet rather than at the state finals.

One other double winner emerged: Kearny sprinter Darnay Scott, who won the 100 in 10.59 seconds and the 200 at 21.27. Riley Washington, a junior from Southwest, placed second in each event, finishing in 10.61, and 21.60.

Washington was first out of the blocks in the 100, but Scott caught him halfway through, then surged by him in the final 10 meters.

“Riley got off to a good start,” Scott said. “But I just relaxed myself and just ran.”

Two races had surprise winners.

Isaac Sanchez of Castle Park won the 800 meters and bettered his sixth-place preliminary time by more than four seconds, finishing at 1:54.34.

Javier Lozano of Helix paced the 3,200, breaking out to an early 30-meter lead in the second lap, and holding it the rest of the way, eventually crossing at 9:21.63. That’s 18 seconds better his seventh-place preliminary time.

The most exciting race was the 1,600 in which San Pasqual’s Robert Walker, Helix’s Daniel das Neves and Mar Vista’s Hector Hernandez all headed into the second-to-last turn in a dead heat.

Half way around the turn Walker made a move and das Neves went with him, leaving Hernandez some five meters behind.

Still trailing by the same distance, Hernandez, when he kicked in the final turn, had to go wide, but managed to reel in the leaders.

He raced by the two early on the home stretch, only to be caught by das Neves. Hernandez, however, won the sprint, finishing at 4:14.11 to Das Neves’ second-place time of 4:14.2. Walker, who lost his legs and fell to the track with about 30 meters remaining, got up to finish third in 4:18.3 (hand timed).

Cary Taylor won the triple jump (48 feet 6 inches) and placed third in the long jump (23-3 1/4) to pace Morse to the boys’ team title with 70 points.
