Help for Child Care Search

Although there is a shortage of licensed child care in North County, several services make the search easier. Here are some of the groups offering referrals:

CHILDCARE RESOURCE SERVICE

Parents who call the service are given the names of five licensed day-care providers. If those don’t work out, five more names are supplied until an appropriate placement is found. The service has lists of special needs child-care providers and of agencies providing in-home service.

In April, the service handled 1,902 referrals for 2,394 children, said program director Paula Leard. Free to parents.

FAMILY DAY CARE ASSN.

Offers referrals to parents who want to place their children in licensed in-home settings, according to North County Area Coordinator Cheron Yusko.

Members of the organization are providers of licensed child care in their homes. Free to parents.

Composed of 40 volunteers who refer parents to licensed family day care homes. Free to parents.

Provides referrals for licensed homes in North County only. Free to parents.

University City residents Katherine DeGenaro and Susan Garfin published a book titled “Childcare: San Diego,” which is a directory of some 600 state-licensed day care facilities in San Diego County.

The book is available at book stores for $8.95, and also by writing SUKA Publications, 3368 Governor Drive, Suite F321, San Diego, CA 92122, for $11.73, which includes tax and handling.
