Horse Stumbles, Bay Meadows Jockey Killed

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Jockey Lute Proctor, 22, was pronounced dead at a hospital after being thrown and trampled during the seventh race on the quarter horse program at Bay Meadows Race Course Saturday night.
Proctor’s mount, Shameless Six, appeared to clip heels with another horse and stumbled badly. Proctor was thrown in front of his mount.
The jockey, taken from the track by ambulance, was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at San Mateo County Hospital.
Proctor suffered severe head and neck injuries, a hospital spokesman said, but the cause of death was not immediately determined.
Proctor was a native of Mecker, Colo. Among his major victories was the Grade I Vessels Maturity at Los Alamitos in 1989.
