World IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : Raid by Guerrillas Frees 131 Prisoners

A guerrilla attack on El Salvador’s largest prison freed 131 inmates, including 53 political prisoners, and left 15 people dead, authorities said. Rebels blew a hole in the wall of La Esperanza Prison near San Salvador late Monday and battled soldiers guarding it for more than an hour, officials said. The dead reportedly included four rebels, two soldiers and nine prisoners caught in the crossfire.
