Woo on LAPD

Councilman Michael Woo is right. Daryl Gates cannot be trusted to do the job of reforming the Los Angeles Police Department (Part A, July 28). How can he be? He spent two hours recently in a special meeting with several councilmen criticizing a good many of the important reforms recommended by the Christopher Commission. These are vital reforms which must be instituted if the police department is going to perform responsibly. Gates has said that he will continue to speak out against them. What is really scary is the possibility that, come next April, Gates will say he has changed his mind and decided to stay on and on and on.
