Little Damage in Unocal Refinery Fire

A crude oil spill sparked a brief fire at the Unocal oil refinery in Wilmington on Wednesday, but no serious injury or property damage was reported.
The blaze broke out at 6 a.m. after 1,000 barrels of crude oil flowed onto the ground from a broken pump, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. The city sent 14 engine companies to the scene and extinguished the fire by 6:47 a.m. with help from Unocal personnel, Wells said.
Unocal spokeswoman Jane McClintock described the fire as a minor incident. Wells agreed: “It was just the crude oil that burned on the ground. There was no structural loss.”
